    The Contradiction of Crimmigation

    This essay argues that we should find Crimmigration, which is the collapsing of immigration law with criminal law, morally problematic for three reasons. First, it denies those who are facing criminal penalties important constitutional protections. Second, it doubly punishes those who have already served their criminal sentence with an added punishment that should be considered cruel and unusual (i.e., indefinite imprisonment or exile). Third, when the tactics aimed at protecting and serving local communities get usurped by the federal government for immigration enforcement purposes, they often undermine these original aims or get used in ways that conflict with the U.S. Constitution. These concerns should prompt us therefore either to reject the government’s plenary power over immigration or require the federal government to be more consistent about maintaining the separation between criminal law and immigration law

    Duality in two capacitively coupled layered arrays of ultrasmall Josephson junctions

    We consider the problem of two capacitively coupled Josephson junction arrays made of ultrasmall junctions. Each one of the arrays can be in the semiclassical or quantum regimes, depending on their physical parameter values. The former case is dominated by a Cooper-pair superfluid while the quantum one is dominated by dynamic vortices leading to an insulating behavior. We first consider the limit when both arrays are in the semiclassical limit, and next the case when one array is quantum and the other semiclassical. We present WKB and Mean Field theory results for the critical temperature of each array when both are in the semiclassical limit. When one array is in the semiclassical regime and the other one in the quantum fluctuations dominated regimes, we derive a duality transformation between the charged and vortex dominated arrays that involve a gauge vector field, which is proportional to the site coupling capacitance between the arrays. The system considered here has been fabricated and we make some predictions as to possible experimentally measurable quantities that could be compared with theory.Comment: 25 pages in Revtex, To appear in J.     Parametric Immunization in Bond Portfolio Management

    In this paper, we evaluate the relative immunization performance of the multifactor parametric interest rate risk model based on the Nelson-Siegel-Svensson specification of the yield curve with that of standard benchmark investment strategies, using European Central Bank yield curve data in the period between January 3, 2005 and December 31, 2011. In addition, we examine the role of portfolio design in the success of immunization strategies, particularly the role of the maturity bond. Considering multiperiod tests, the goal is to assess, in a highly volatile interest rate period, whether the use of the multifactor parametric immunization model contributes to improve immunization performance when compared to traditional single-factor duration strategies and whether durationmatching portfolios constrained to include a bond maturing near the end of the holding period prove to be an appropriate immunization strategy. Empirical results show that: (i) immunization models (single- and multi-factor) remove most of the interest rate risk underlying a naĂŻve or maturity strategy; (ii) duration-matching portfolios constrained to include the maturity bond and formed using a single-factor model outperform the traditional duration-matching portfolio set up using a ladder portfolio and provide appropriate protection against interest rate risk; (iii) the multifactor parametric model outperforms all the other non-duration and duration-matching strategies, behaving almost like a perfect immunization asset; (iv) these results are consistent to changes in the rebalancing frequency of bond portfolios

    Gauge Invariance and Second Class Constraints in 3-D Linearized Gravity

    A recently introduced approach for the dynamical analysis and quantization of field theoretical models with second class constraints is ilustrated applied to linearized gravity in 3-D. The canonical structure of two different models of linerized gravity in 3-D, the intermediate and the self dual models, is discussed in detail. It is shown that the first order self dual model whose constraints are all second class may be regarded as a gauge fixed version of the second order gauge invariant intermediate model. In particular it is shown how to construct the gauge invariant hamiltonian of the intermediate model starting from the one of the self dual model.     Manifold-Marketing:a new marketing archetype for the information age, applied to the adoption of oral contraceptives and other drugs by end-users

    Taking into account the new communication paradigm of Social Media this paper proposes an original marketing archetype for the information age named by the authors as “ManifoldMarketing”. The conducted study explores the contribution of participating in social networks on the Internet for the adoption process of oral contraceptives (OCs) and other drugs by their end users. Empirical data for this research was collected from a sample of 1162 respondents of a target population formed by Portuguese women, current or potential users of OCs who had reached a level of college education. The results obtained after applying a package of statistical techniques involving descriptive statistics, nonparametric tests and multivariate analysis show that the use of the Internet as well as the participation in the social network Facebook can contribute to the adoption process of OCs. Market segments which are relevant to pharmaceutical marketing were identified based on criteria that associate the information and communication technologies (ICT) with the adoption process of OCs carried out by the consumers themselves. This study also demonstrates that the adoption model and segmentation proposed can be generalized to other markets in the health sector. Considering the obtained results and the proposed "Manifold Marketing", innovative pharmaceutical marketing guidelines are presented.N/
